As Head Coach

In early October, Kelly’s team reached the one spot in several polls, including AP, Harris, and USA Today Coaches Poll. A few weeks later, they also got the #1 ranking in the BCS. With a 37–20 victory over the Oregon State Beavers, the Ducks finished the conference play undefeated and won their second straight Pac-10 title.

In December, after an unbeaten season and a final #2 ranking in the BCS, Oregon was chosen to face the #1 Auburn Tigers in the BCS national championship game in January 2011. They were Coached by Gene Chizik, the Tigers, from the Southeastern Conference, had Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton as their quarterback. The Ducks lost a close game, with Auburn scoring a last-second 19-yard field goal. It was the closest that a team from the Pacific Northwest had come to winning a share of the national championship since 1991.

The Ducks were aiming for another shot at the BCS Championship, but their hopes were dashed when they lost due to a missed field goal attempt at the end of the game. Despite this setback, they managed to win their third straight Pac-12 championship by beating UCLA in the first-ever Pac-12 Football Championship Game. They then played in the Rose Bowl against Wisconsin, and won the game. This was their second Rose Bowl appearance in three years and marked their sixth appearance overall. It also marked their third consecutive year in a BCS bowl game.

After that, Oregon won ten games in a row. But they lost to Stanford in overtime, in November, despite having two chances to win with field goals. But, they bounced back by defeating Oregon State in the Civil War game for the fifth year in a row. Then, they faced Kansas State in the 2013 Fiesta Bowl. Oregon dominated the game, and marked their fourth straight year in a BCS bowl game.

Philadelphia Eagles

Chip Kelly

In his first year with the Eagles, Kelly turned things around after a tough season before he arrived. The team went from a 4–12 record in 2012 to a 10–6 record in his first year, winning the NFC Eastern Division Championship. This made him only the second coach in NFL history to achieve a division title in his debut season. However, they lost in the playoffs to the New Orleans Saints.

In his second year, despite facing challenges like player injuries, Kelly still managed to finish with a 10–6 record. In January 2015, Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie announced that Kelly would have more control over the team’s roster, including the draft and free agency. This led to some significant player trades, including sending LeSean McCoy to the Buffalo Bills and Nick Foles to the St. Louis Rams. Kelly also signed DeMarco Murray, the former Cowboys running back and reigning rushing champion.

San Francisco 49ers

In January 2016, Kelly became the head coach for the San Francisco 49ers. This made him their third coach in as many seasons, after Jim Harbaugh and Jim Tomsula. In his first game, the 49ers beat the Los Angeles Rams at Levi’s Stadium, marked the first shutout in Week 1. However, things took a turn as the 49ers went on a 13-game losing streak, leading to speculation about Kelly and the general manager, potentially being fired at the end of the season.

UCLA Bruins

After a break, UCLA played against Stanford and won the game, their first victory over Stanford since 2008. They limited Stanford to 198 total yards and only 55 rushing yards. Then, they defeat Arizona State at the Rose Bowl, led them in the fourth quarter. Next, they defeated Colorado at the Rose Bowl, marking their first three-game winning streak since 2015.

In 2022, UCLA started the season for the first time since 2013. They ended the season with a 37–35 loss to Pittsburgh in the Sun Bowl due to a last-second field goal. Ohio State

On February 9, 2024, Kelly left UCLA after six seasons to become the offensive coordinator for Ohio State. He had tried for similar positions in the NFL before this. Kelly replaced Bill O’Brien, who left Ohio State to be the head coach for Boston College. This move brought Kelly back together with Ryan Day, who had worked with Kelly before at New Hampshire, Philadelphia, and San Francisco.
